A Few Housekeeping Points for Setting Up Your Teams

  • All competitions run on a rolling lockout, meaning you can change players until the start of their game each round.

  • Critically, you need to ensure your team is full and every spot, including the bench, is filled before the first game each round, or you will score 0 for the round.

  • Unlike other formats, there are no captains, but you can adjust the rarities of players to increase their scoring power.

  • GDS players do not gain dual-position status during the year. Card positions are set for the season ahead.

  • When signing up use the code “BOBS” at sign up to receive 3x9 player packs to Jump start your team. Use this for more ways to get free packs

GDS AFL Fantasy General Strategy

Over the last couple of years, we’ve seen specific trends emerge that are key to scoring weekly and seasonal wins. Here are the key strategies:

1. Gotta Risk It to Get the Biscuit – Well, at Least a Little Bit

When I say this, I mean that unlike AFL Fantasy and Supercoach, you can change your entire team each week. As a result, week-to-week matchups are vital. Last year, rucks vs Geelong were money, and defenders vs St Kilda were unbelievable. Rolling the right players each week is the key to winning the prize money. Stay tuned with us as we track these trends across the year.

2. Ignore the Salary Cap Hype

This format is more like draft than classic Fantasy styles when it comes to ranking players. We only care about the top 15ish players in each position. The salary cap content out there is excellent, but don’t get trapped in the value of players like Isaac Cummings or Peatling. Unless the Crows make a deep finals run (haha, spare me), these midfielders just won’t be playable. However, there will be players who have purple patches and those that rise up ranks, getting on these players at the right time can be exciting and rewarding. Just make sure you have the player card. It can pay of massively to invest in these guys early.

3. Be Ready to Jump Off Sinking Ships Early

This is one of the hardest aspects of GDS. When a star player is stinking it up or getting tagged into the ground (see Stewart last year), be ready to move on fast. There’s no need to hold course—find someone in form and reap the rewards. The pain comes when the player you dropped scores a 170 on you the following week.

4. Max Your Cap in the Right Spots

Player cards have various score multipliers that boost your score:

  • Bronze: x1.0 multiplier, costs 500k

  • Silver: x1.1 multiplier, costs 600k

  • Gold: x1.2 multiplier, costs 700k

  • Platinum: x1.3 multiplier, costs 800k

  • Diamond: x1.4 multiplier, costs 900k

  • Legend: x1.5 multiplier, costs 1M

In classic and challenger formats with limited salary caps, spending your extra multipliers on higher-scoring players will pay significant dividends. Historically these guys have been Rucks, Midfielders and the top defenders. Forwards tend to be a place to save dollars but also a place you can win big rolling the right match up. This fully explains AFL Gameday Scoring

5. Collect an All-Star or Two

Along with the standard rarity cards, there are All-Star cards in the game. These come from the top scores of the previous year and can be found in All-Star packs until they are all packed. These cards score x1.35 and only cost 700k. If you can get the right ones, they can provide a great advantage in classic and challenger formats.

GDS Starter Competition

Starter Comp

Salary Cap: $11,000,000

Restrictions: Bronze cards only

Prizes:

  • Weekly:

    • 1st $100 GDS Pack credit

    • 2nd-5th 3 Player Common Pack

    • 6th-10,000th 4x1player Starter Packs

  • Seasonal: There is a single prize card on offer for the seasonal winner of the starter competition – winning this card will show a real sense of being maybe the best GDS player.

Starter-Specific Strategy

This competition is uncomplicated, to say the least. Pick the best team you think will score well. There’s no worrying about multipliers—just put in the best players from the free bronze packs you’ve opened.

In this comp, I like to throw my darts. Everyone is playing only bronze cards, so you need to include a few Points of Difference (PODs) to hunt for the win. Take some risks and look for those potential breakout players who could separate you from the pack.

Get involved, and use our code "BOBAFL" at sign up for to jump start your team with some free packs. Drop us a comment below who you think will be the top Defender in 2025 and their average. Head here if you want to know more about Gamedays Squad.

Good luck building your GDS AFL Fantasy team—stay tuned for more insights and strategies!
