AFL GameDay Squad Round 2 Review – Key Takeaways
The AFL GameDay Squad Round 2 Review is here. Join us as we break down the top fantasy stars, the biggest disappointments, and the PODs that turned the round on its head. We’ll also look at how the Blokes on the Ball coaches performed across all divisions to see who was this week's dunce.Let’s get stuck into the AFL GameDay Squad Round 2 Review and see who dominated, who disappointed, and who was the ultimate point-of-difference hero!
Top 3 Players of AFL GameDay Squad Round 2

These three players delivered massive scores and rewarded coaches who backed them in:
Connor Rozee continued his brilliant form as Port’s M1 with 175. He is a fantastic footballer who has been able to stat-stuff in all departments—even snagging goals when resting forward.
Jack Macrae also continues his form. Despite not being a top midfielder (see Kane’s Corner), he’s delivering plenty of great scores for us.
Zach Merrett is a GDS stud. He’s been doing it for years and dropped a 168 to prove the doubters (aka me) wrong. This bloke is hitting form and will be hard to stop if he continues to play the way he is.
3 Biggest Disappointments of the Round
Not every player lived up to expectations. These three underwhelmed fantasy coaches and left many scrambling for points:

Tom Stewart his dream defenders match up ended very early and his 11 cooked many a team this week— including several of my own—relegating us to watch others shoot past for the win. He is a great example in GDS that you don’t have to get all the top guys, but it’s more about avoiding the bottom.
Dylan Moore was followed like a lost puppy by Hollands, who managed to limit him to 57. Moore is the best HFF in the AFL right now, and I expect him to bounce back in a big way this year—but against the Giants, it may not be this week.
Tim Taranto was one of my picks to start the year on fire and potentially challenge for the M1 position. I could not have missed my mark more if I tried. Timmy T looks lost at sea, and there are no lifeboats on the horizon. His 76 and two-game average of 89.5 is rapidly seeing him fade away as a fantasy option—like Carlton’s finals hopes.
3 PODs That Won Round 2

GameDay Squad is all about finding the right PODs at the right time. These three under-the-radar picks delivered huge scores and gave savvy coaches a massive edge:
Rowan Marshall – The big man is back! A week after looking uninterested and unfit, he helped lead the Saints to an unlikely win with a score of 162. When he’s in full flight, he’s potentially our best option in the ruck—making Gawn and Xerri look like R2s for sure. If he gets going and you fade… watch out.
Mason Wood – Another Sainter who dominated in the Geelong win. He promised to be a POD for us in the preseason if he continued his 2024 role. If he roams the wings and kicks snags in a team that scores heavily in transition, he could become a regular player for us in 2025. For now, he’s on my watch list—but for anyone who picked him for his 142, well played.
Is Clayton Oliver back to being… Clayton Oliver? In a loss to (checks notes) North Melbourne? Really? (I watched, I don’t believe—have the Roos finally arrived?) The Dees were soundly beaten, but Oliver padded his stat columns for a tasty 133. Two years ago, this bloke was all the rage in the GDS community.

BOBS Coaches Round 2 Results
How did Blokes on the Ball’s squads perform in Round 2? Here’s where we finished across all divisions:
The Goal Practitioner
• Starter – 2nd
• Classic – 7th
• Challenger – 16th
• Champion – 2nd
Bookending my round with a pair of 2s, it’s hard to be disappointed. Avoiding Moore across the board and Stewart in half my teams was nice. Playing Walsh and Brayshaw in half my teams continued to hurt me and stopped better finishes for the round.
We’re now starting to get some data for the year, and some great trends are evolving to help us with our teams.
Cash Money
• Starter – 59th
• Classic – 24th
• Challenger – 12th
• Champion – 13th
I played Houston and Stewart in most teams—that instantly destroyed my squads. The early fade of Dylan Moore from every squad was a good start, but I missed too many good scores to challenge for the top spots this week.
Beast Mode
• Starter – 4th
• Classic – 13th
• Challenger – 6th
• Champion – 15th
I Played Tim Taranto - see you guys next week
Cash Money is rapidly falling behind in three BOBS Crew with his 3rd consecutive dunce of the week. Gonna have to start seeing if anyone will take a check, cause Cash Money has dried up.
