AFL GameDay Squad Round 1 Review – Key Takeaways
The AFL GameDay Squad Round 1 Review is here, join us as we break down the top fantasy stars, the biggest disappointments, and the PODs that turned the round on its head.
We’ll also look at how the Blokes on the Ball coaches performed across all divisions, to see who was this week’s dunce.
Let’s get stuck into the AFL GameDay Squad Round 1 Review and see who dominated, who disappointed, and who was the ultimate point-of-difference hero!
Top 3 Players of AFL GameDay Squad Round 1

These three players delivered massive scores and rewarded coaches who backed them in:
1. Jye Caldwell 170 – The biggest score of the round and some would call a pod pick but after last year’s performances and this round’s score Caldwell is become a premium midfielder. 36 disposals 1 goal and 11 tackles
2. Josh Dunkley 155 – The quiet achiever at Brisbane just gets the job done. 27 disposals with a goal and 10 tackles
3. Jordan Dawson 155 – Dawson looked amazing versus the saints and was also getting attention from Windhager but that didn’t matter. 2.2 to go with 27 disposals and 24 being kicks, Dawson is in for a big year.
Special mention to the DK brothers who dominated.

3 Biggest Disappointments of the Round

Not every player lived up to expectations. These three underwhelmed fantasy coaches and left many scrambling for points:
1. Lachie Neale 46 – Copped a heavy tag from James Jordan so a low score was expected but 46. 10 disposals in a full game from Lachie Neale would nearly be one of his worst performances of his career. Expect a big response vs West Coast.
2. Rowan Marshall 67– Started full forward and stayed there all day with Boyd taking the ruck duties. Marshall looked sore and slow avoid until we see some better performances or Boyd is dropped
3. Harry Perryman 57 – Might be a bit of a trend for defensive midfielders when their team easily wins. Perryman just wasn’t used in build up play collecting only 1 mark and 13 disposals.
3 PODs That Won Round 1
GameDay Squad is all about finding the right PODs at the right time. These three under-the-radar picks delivered huge scores and gave savvy coaches a massive edge:

1. Christian Salem 152 – Salem would have been one hell of a POD pick especially with some of the popular picks struggling to finish off good starts. Salem’s 30 disposal game with 27 of them being kicks will force coaches to take notice and force his way into our teams
2. Jy Simpkin 148 – The preseason form continued into round 1, Simpkin was everywhere collecting 30 disposals and kicking a goal. Is it finally his year?
3. Sam De Koning 146– If you played Sam De Koning this week you have bigger balls than Sam Konstas ramping Jasprit Bumrah on boxing day. We all knew about the role change to ruck this year, but no one expected 25 disposals, 6 marks and 18 hit outs.
BOBS Coaches Round 1 Results
How did Blokes on the Ball’s squads perform in Round 1? Here’s where we finished across all divisions:
The Goal Practitioner
· Starter – 2663 points & ranked 16
· Classic – 2807 points & ranked 33
· Challenger – 3544 points & ranked 3
· Champion – 3780 points & ranked 5
Summary:
I went ok this week especially in Challenger and Champion, where I’m focusing this season. I was agonizingly close to good finishes again this week. Backing up last weeks 3rd and 5th finishes with 3rd and 5th again. Noah Anderson was essentially my pick of the round. New captain playing against one of the best midfield match ups (he was my first selected mid this week). Harry McKay and Carlton’s inability to play football cost me big selection Walsh and Cripps in every team – Carlton gets my spray this week.
Cash Money
· Starter – 2551 points & ranked 70
· Classic – 2711 points & ranked 69
· Challenger – 3440 points & ranked 9
· Champion – 3493 points & ranked 23
Summary:
My shining lights this round was playing the likes of Jordan Dawson and Noah Anderson in most competitions. What hurt my round was in classic playing 3 Carlton midfielders and Harry McKay in every competition. In challenger and open playing Tim English killed me when I was watching Gawn dominate on Sunday.
Beast Mode
· Starter – 2633 points & ranked 30
· Classic – 2885 points & ranked 12
· Challenger – 3505 points & ranked 5
· Champion –3339 points & ranked 28
Summary:
Making Cash Money back-to-back dunce of the week was great but need a better week this week to get some credibility back.
